Daily Prompt: In Good Faith

The Daily Prompt for today is: Describe a memory or encounter in which you considered your faith, religion, spirituality — or lack of — for the first time.

Faith: A Poem

Son, I have to tell you something.

What is it Dad?

Grandma, she…she’s gone son.

What do you mean? She passed away,

she’s with God now.

You mean she died?

Yes.

But why? Why did God take her?

Because it was her time son.

But I’m going to miss her, I already do.

I know, but her mission on Earth was complete.

I don’t like God right now. He took Grandma.

Maybe you should ask him why son.

Okay, but I still don’t like him.

I know, in time you’ll forgive.

I don’t know, I miss Grandma.

Dad, I asked God about Grandma.

What did he say?

He said he needed another angel.

What did you say? I said okay, I understand.

Did you forgive him?

Yes, and he told me I can talk to her anytime,

she’s my angel.

I just have to have faith.

A Daily Prompt For A Sunday Morning Musing

Several types of Cirrus clouds.

The Daily Prompt talks about finding yourself in the zone. Getting lost in a simple activity. We all take time to stare at the clouds. Whether alone, or with others. I thought a poem would be appropriate.

Lost:

Staring at the clouds in the sky.

They float by, in shapes and hues.

A tiger, a lion, a dog.

A bird, a castle, was that a fish?

Different shapes. Different things.

All characters that distract from my surroundings.

The wind is blowing, the tall grass sways.

Sunlight comes and goes as the clouds of shapes pass by.

Birds, I hear none. I forget the bustling people around me.

I forget the past, get lost in my present, and don’t think of the future.

The shapes of clouds take me away.

I get lost staring at clouds in the sky.

Daily Prompt: Charitable

The Daily Prompt asks: You’ve inherited $5 million, with instructions that you must give it all away — but you can choose any organizations you like to be the beneficiaries. Where does the money go?

There are many causes I believe in. However, if I had to give away $5 million, I would divide the money between two causes: The March Of Dimes and Literacy Volunteers of America.

My son came a month early. For me this was a life-changing time. He spent a week in the NICU. While many families experience significantly longer NICU stays, the ups and downs are no different. For myself, the March of Dimes supports research and the prevention of premature birth. This cause truly hits home for me. I believe their work, and the work of NICU doctors and nurses is truly remarkable. So if I had the millions of dollars, I would donate to them.

Another cause that I believe is important to all of society is literacy. Reading is truly fundamental regardless of what profession a person enters. Books, short stories, poems, they are all adventures that anyone can enjoy. How amazing is reading?Literacy is key to learning and getting the most out of any education, and education is the key to a prosperous, civil society. So I would donate to Literacy Volunteers of America. Not to mention, as a parent, blogger, aspiring writer, and avid reader, this just makes sense.

Daily Prompt: VIP

The Daily Prompt asks: Who’s the most important person in your life — and how would your day-to-day existence be different without them?

The most important person in my life is my son, we’ll call him Little A. He’s only 9 months old, but the joy he brings to daily life is truly amazing. Yes, of course there are many stressful moments, especially when he’s crying and neither mommy nor I can figure out what’s wrong. But, I wouldn’t trade this in for anything.

The amazing part of Little A is in a single day he can make you laugh, make you curse, scratch your head, think, problem solve, and most importantly realize just what are the truly important things in life.

I can’t fathom day-to-day life without him. No longer is such a thought comprehensible. Many people said, before he came along, enjoy your spare time. Get more sleep. Do everything you want to do. To a certain level, I understand those sentiments. Yet, my daily existence has never been more joyous, more fulfilling, rewarding.

Having Little A has done something else: taught me humility, courage, and personal strength. I don’t think he will fully understand until he has a child of his own.

On a side note, there is one more person who is the most important: my wife and Little A’s mom. I’m not sure how either Little A or myself would exist on a daily basis without her. Of course she tells me the most important thing for me is coffee. But I digress.

Daily Prompt: B+

Today’s Daily Prompt asks us to write: Write about what you did last weekend as though you’re a music critic reviewing a new album.

Here goes nothing….

Last weekend’s album opened with a prelude describing how the artist was thinking way to much about this blog. An early morning rising due to the sounds emanating from the baby’s room gave the tired father some time to think about his blogging career.

Track one is titled “The Morning Bottle.” Take this title for its literal meaning. No liquor here, straight up mommy’s milk for the little guy. Seven ounces of pure enjoyment for the baby. However, remember track one as a premonition for a later track.

Track two: “The Diaper Song.” Again, nothing unique to the content other than this track gives you that queasy feeling. A mix of vertigo and green bean induced aroma. Track two has the potential to hit number two on the charts.

Track three: “Baby, Daddy Loves You, But Please Take a Nap.” An ongoing theme throughout this album is the simplicity of the message. Track three continues this trend. The artist appeals to every parent out there with this one. If, as a parent, you can’t relate, you must have a nanny.

Track four: “You Wake the Baby, I Beat You.” This was a pleasant surprise track, as it’s actually a lullaby.

Track five: “Lunch, Anything Is Fine, As Long As I Ain’t Gotta Make It.” The emotion poured from this track. The lyrics give the listener an overall sense of exhaustion and the desire for an “easy” meal. Spoiler: there is a bonus track at the end talking about a foot long sub for cheap.

Track six: “Wahhhh, Wahhhh, Wahhhhhhh. Come Get Me Out of the Crib, I’m Awake.” Did I mention track five is the shortest? Track six comes to us with a sense of urgency. I wasn’t overly impressed with the lyrics as the chorus is a bit much.

Track seven: “The Bottle, a Nighttime Edition.” Remember the premonition from track one? The bottle is back, except this time it requires a bottle opener and a chilled mug for the artist.

Track eight: “Hush, Daddy Is Sleeping.” The album abruptly comes to an end with track eight. The lyrics provide us with some interesting hints. First, track seven skipped, so we get the pleasure of listening to it twice. Second, we realize the album will repeat automatically the following day.

Daily Prompt: Cupid’s Arrow

The Daily Prompt states: It’s Valentine’s Day, so write an ode to someone or something you love. Bonus points for poetry!

Ode to My Wife, On Valentine’s Day

My wife is sweet, like the chocolate covered strawberries she eats.

Each day, she gives our family her all.

Thankfully at night, the bed catches her when she is ready to fall.

My little son, while a ton of fun, gives my wife much work to do.

If not for her, then who, would my son look to?

I love her so, not just on Valentine’s Day, but each day to and fro.

Daily Prompt: All About Me

The Daily Prompt asks: Explain why you chose your blog’s title and what it means to you.

This one is pretty easy. I chose The Evolving Dad because that is just what I am. Once I became a dad I realized life was different and I’m changing everyday just as much as my little guy. My thoughts, my priorities, my actions are all “evolving.”

Not to mention, I am an aspiring writer. As anyone who is a writer or a blogger knows, writing is an evolution. We are constantly learning more about our own style and writing ideas. So I thought not only am I an evolving dad, but I’m an evolving writer too.

In the end, the title means to me that I will never stop growing. No matter where life, my family, and writing will take me. I will continue to evolve and grow.

Daily Prompt: Childhood Revisited

The Daily Prompt asks: Sure, you turned out pretty good, but is there anything you wish had been different about your childhood? If you have kids, is there anything you wish were different for them?

I think everyone relates to this topic in some way. For myself, I wish I had more interaction with people outside my family. Don’t get me wrong, family is the most important thing in the world. But, as a child being surrounded primarily by family members, you don’t always learn there is more to the world.

Growing up around a single family culture makes it difficult once the child grows and encounters others. So for myself, if I could go back in time, I would’ve wanted more personal interaction with others.

For my son, I would like to see less uncertainty in his world. It appears to me, the world is less certain about itself. Leaders and events appear to take us down dangerous paths more quickly. Our global society is so highly integrated with communications, that leaders of different beliefs are willing to jeopardize so much for said beliefs. I hope, that my child grows up in a more certain world.

Daily Prompt: Musical

Daily prompt: Musical asks what role does music play in your life?

Growing up I tickled the ivories on the piano and blasted away on the trumpet. Playing music was truly a passion that faded away as I grew older, (secretly I would love to be in a jazz band).

Like so many others, music marked major and minor milestones through life. From graduations to my wedding, music painted the picture of events in life. Songs I listen to define the minor milestones such as birthdays and holidays.

As I’ve grown older my memories of past events seem to have a soundtrack to them. If I listen to #41, my favorite Dave Matthews Band song, I recall many memories of hanging out with my friends. Ironically, I remember thinking back then whether or not I would look back at those moments when I listened to various songs. I’m still amazed how a specific song elicits memories of a specific event.

Fast forward to the present and music fills everyday life. Why? because of Little A. When my wife was expecting, I never imagined how integral music would be in the daily life of my son and us. Everything plays music. The star that hangs from his play mat; the miniature iPod-looking device strapped to his play center; the Leap Frog dog named Scout that holds up to ten songs; and finally the aquarium that lights up and plays classical music to help Little A go to sleep (thank you aquarium).

Music is everywhere, anytime. Music truly defines life. I think many of us don’t realize how much music our ears ingest, voluntarily or involuntarily, on any given day. So to answer the question, music plays a humongous role in my life. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Daily Prompt: I Got Skills

The Daily Prompt asks: If you could choose to be a master (or mistress) of any skill in the world, which skill would you pick?

The skill to successfully dress my son in one shot. In particular, I lack the ability to correctly button all buttons on his sleepers. Don’t ask me why this is, but I always seem to miss one or two. Of course this leads to all the buttons being off. Worse, his diaper tends to stick out the bottom because of the gaping hole caused by missed buttons.

I think to master this skill, and by master I mean do it correctly and quickly, would be a great accomplishment for me. Not to mention, my little guy won’t get impatient and agitated.
