A Star Trek Quote With Real Life Meaning

Let me deviate slightly from my normal talk of babies and writing. I watched the new Star Trek Movie trailer on YouTube. As a closet Trekkie, I started thinking about all the Trek movies in the franchise. I then thought about some of the lines our favorite characters uttered over the decades.

One quote stuck out in my mind. Commander William Riker (played by Jonathan Frakes) said to Zefram Cochran (played by James Cromwell) in Star Trek: First Contact, “Don’t try to be a great man, just be a man.”

After Riker told Cochran that rhetorical nonsense was uttered by Cochran himself ten years in the future, you could see true meaning behind this quote.

In everything we do these days, we try to be great. Being a dad, a husband, going to work and starting a writing career. I try to be great. But, if I take Cochran’s words to heart, I shouldn’t try too hard. Just be a man. Everything else will fall into place.

Come on you Trekkie’s, any other Star Trek quotes that hold meaning for you?

  1. I always liked the quote: ‘time is the fire in which we burn’ from Star Trek Generations.

    Also, ‘the needs of the many, outweigh, the needs of the few….or the one’

    or;

    ‘i have been and ever shall be….your friend, live long and prosper’

    Any of the Shakespeare quoted from STVI is also really good.

    • I didn’t think of Spock’s ‘needs of the many’ line. That is truly a classic. In many ways it is completely applicable to our current world.

      Definitely excellent quotes. Thanks for pointing them out and for reading!

  2. “I am a Klingon warrior, and a Starfleet officer. I’ve piloted starships through Dominion minefields; I’ve stood in battle against Kelvans twice my size; I courted and won the heart of the magnificent Jadzia Dax. If I can do these things, I can make this child go to sleep!” – Worf

    Props for pulling out Star Trek!! I used the above quote as the starting point for one of my earlier posts, http://familynomadic.wordpress.com/2012/09/07/even-klingons-struggle/
